PROPERTY Description

The Chaika is a lovely house on a secluded lot at the end of a street with no other house adjacent and no thru traffic. Beautiful live oak in front gives a nice view out the glassed-in porch. Only a short 5-minute walk to the beach on a rarely-used sandy drive. And less than a 5-minute drive to St. Helena sound for calmer waters and great beach combing. Chaika means "seagull" in Russian.

4 bedrooms with beds for 10 people (6 adults, 4 children ideal) comfortably, plus a full-size futon on the enclosed glass porch. 2 full baths plus private shower downstairs. Large open area in center of house to gather - spacious kitchen, dining area, and living room all connected and open. A great house for families and friends to connect! And we are pet friendly. (If bringing a pet, please notify the owner in advance and be aware that a $160 pet fee is added to the listed price).

Equipped with reverse osmosis water filter, but also close to water tower for drinking water supply. High speed WiFi and cable TV. Everything laid out and furnished for simplicity, convenience, and community. Please note that while blankets and pillows are amply provided, guests should bring their own linens and towels. Contact owner in advance for local linen rental at a reasonable rate.

We welcome renters who are looking forward to building some great memories of time with family and friends in this lovely setting. Chaika has been available for rent since 2012 - we enjoy hosting people who have made Chaika an annual tradition as well as introducing new guests to this great home. We recently listed the house on this site, so there are limited reviews. But we had 27 reviews with an average of 5-star on our previous vacation-by-owner site.

During the peak season (May 15-Aug 15) we rent only on a weekly basis, Sat/Sat. Off season, we have more flexibility as to duration and have more room to negotiate.

The Chaika offered a very comfortable
The Chaika offered a very comfortable, safe environment for our family as we enjoyed our family vacation to the beach. The layout of the rooms allowed for appropriate individual privacy while maintaining family unity. The location of the house and property was pleasant for familial privacy while keeping access to the beach easy and convenient.

Edisto is one of our favorite places
We spent a little over a week at Jim's home and couldn't have asked for a more rejuvenating week away from work. Edisto is one of our favorite places, and his house is a very easy walk to the beach. We enjoyed many of the local restaurants and had everything we needed to cook at the house as well. There was more than enough space at the house, and everything was in pristine condition when we arrived. We especially loved hanging out in the covered area under the house in the evenings. We saw deer multiple times most days. We were thankful we could bring our dog Goober, too. There was plenty of space for him to play around the house and in the field behind it! Of course he loves the beach too. We were very sad to leave Chaika and hope to come back very soon! Thanks for your hospitality!

What a great place for a wonderful beach experience!
What a great place for a wonderful beach experience! The location in a secluded spot is close to the front beach, yet near the inlet with calmer waters if some prefer that. We found everything we needed and more in Chaika, as our family likes less crowded beaches and in more natural surroundings. The kids loved the climbing tree in the beautiful old live oak, and we all loved the swing hanging from it! Thanks, James, for sharing your "happy place" with us!!

25th Wedding Anniversar Week
Our first trip to Edisto and The Chaiaka House was Labor Day weekend 2015. We loved it so much, my daughter booked it for our whole family the week of June 18 - 25, 2016. My husband, myself, five grown children and two grandchildren all stayed and enjoyed everything about our accommodations. The children were as excited about bunk beds as they were the beach! I loved the opportunity to reserve same house (if done at check out) for the same dates next year. Unfortunately, with my stage IV cancer, I can't plan that far ahead but would definitely be an annual occupant if health allowed. Thank you for sharing your home with my family to make some wonderful memories.

Family Getaway
This was our first stay at Chaika and we enjoyed every minute!! The house is comfortable with everything that you need. The location is on a dead end street so it is very quiet and peaceful. We were greeted by deer a few times upon returning to the house in the evening. The owners are great with communication and the reality company is also easy to deal with. We have already booked our stay for next year!!

Family Getaway
Our family had such a wonderful time at Edisto. Our favorite part was Chaika! The house was spotless and had everything we needed. Jim was so helpful getting us set up for a last-minute arrival. We love the secluded location and were able to truly rest and enjoy being together as a family. Thank you so much for opening your home to us! We can't wait to come back.

awesome place
Chaika on Edisto is an awesome place close to everything and great for larger groups. We used it for a long weekend to relieve stress and that's exactly what we did. Returning home feeling refreshed and ready to start the new year.

ABSOLUTE BEST
This home was the ABSOLUTE BEST for our family gathering. My cousins and I (about 10 first cousins) and our families decided to come back to the Edisto area to spend a Thanksgiving weekend together. Our plans had to change somewhat post Hurricane Matthew because a couple of places my cousins rented were damaged so we moved the major festivities to a hotel in Charleston. James kept me informed pre-stay about what was going on with the house so I never was worried about whether or not we had use of Chaika. My brother and his wife, my cousin, and my husband and I stayed at Chaika and we were amazed at how much space this home has. You have an enclosed porch on the upper level front, you have a rear balcony coming off the kitchen (with steps down to the lower level patio), with a center living area - large kitchen - and two bedrooms and a single bath on either side of the central living area. The lower level patio allows for covered parking but it's huge under there - our family could have done our crab feast there if we had known how large a space it was, you really can't tell in pictures (we did that in Charleston, too). When we checked in to the house there was an alarm going off and we found that it was the smoke detector. We called back to the realty company and they sent someone over quickly and he changed the batteries. We could have taken care of this ourselves if we had just read the House Guide which would have told us there were supplies in the closet and we would have changed the battery ourselves. Everything in the home was labeled to make it easier for you to find things - big pots, baking items, glasses... Very nice touch for visitors. This space was perfect for us. Be aware, this is the south and we sometimes get insects in the house but the home was equipped with supplies in the closet (insects feel the cooler weather, too, and like to find a little warmer area - which sometimes happens to be the house). Our little reunion took us into Charleston on each day but my cousins came back to Chaika on Saturday night where we did shrimp and grits for half the crew. They absolutely loved the home and wrote down the info because they plan to use it in the future for their own stays. We really only used the home for sleeping other than the shrimp dinner so we wish we could have stayed longer. The weather was SO COOPERATIVE but we only had a short time to visit the beach (you are less than a 5 minute walk) - I grew up n the area (Summerville/Charleston) but the weather was much warmer than anticipated (in the high 70s). We definitely will be back. Lovely time.

Family Wedding
We stayed at the Chayka while visiting the area for a family wedding. Hurricane Matthew just happened a couple of weeks ago and Edisto was hit pretty hard. What really stood out to us about the island is what an excellent job everyone is doing of repairing the damages, how welcoming they are and the wonderful hometown vibe the entire island simple oozes. More specifically, the Chayka was an excellent choice for our group. The layout of the house was a huge plus, with bedrooms arranged in a manner to provide maximum privacy and utilization of space. Deer, grazed around the house all times of day and the beach was just a short, straight walk a couple of blocks away.

Eeverything we needed
James was a great host and made sure we had everything we needed (including sheets and towels since we came from Portland, OR). House was big, comfy, and clean. Really liked the front porch. Enjoyed being in the low country and ate lots of fresh shrimp from the local seafood market (Flowers Seafood). Found a sharks tooth. Flew a kite. Swam in the waves. I highly recommend visiting Botany Bay!
